The Gear of Growth: Expanding Capacity Through Continuous Learning

As we move into the second half of the year, July invites us to take inventory—of progress made, lessons learned, and capacity still waiting to be developed. Leadership growth is never accidental; it’s cultivated through self-awareness, curiosity, and the daily discipline of learning.

In The Gears of Leadership, I wrote, “You don’t outgrow leadership challenges—you grow your capacity to meet them.” That truth speaks to what midyear leadership requires: a willingness to expand.

Growth happens when we stay curious. The most effective leaders are learners at heart. They seek feedback without defensiveness, ask better questions, and see every setback as a seminar in disguise.

Leadership Practices for July:

• Seek new perspective. Read, listen, and learn from voices beyond your comfort zone.

• Mentor intentionally. Teaching others sharpens your own understanding.

• Pause to evaluate. What leadership habit has helped you most this year? Which one needs realignment?

Growth isn’t about perfection—it’s about progression. Leadership, like any living system, must evolve or risk decline.

“Great leaders don’t wait for growth to happen—they create it by staying curious and coachable.”

Let July remind you: your influence grows when your humility does.
